Is CCleaner a Spyware program?

  jimforrest 16:06 13 Feb 15

One of the threads in PCA is headed 'Strange message when using ccleaner' and, at the end of the thread there is a link from Windowstechies that states CCleaner is actually a Spyware program and MUST be removed. Is this true?

The link then advises the reader to download Spyhunter to remove it.

I did not see that message in ponytails thread. I think genuine CCleaner is perfectly safe and a very good free programme.

Funnily enough John it has also appeared in this thread!

If it's untrue, I suspect the authors of CCleaner might get a bit upset if PCA are broadcasting that it's dangerous!

What link?

It's a link in the "Ads by Google" selection below the thread.

CCleaner is good software, I have never been sure about spyhunter though.

Maybe my blocker stopped the Google ad, but I could find no mention of spyhunter in the thread itself. Spyhunter got less than 5 out of 10 on a test (antimalware)

Used Ccleaner for years with no problems.

If you scroll down to just below this thread you will see this link.

I too have used ccleaner for many years and it i s very good but this link seems to suggest otherwise - rather worrying.

As I said earlier not sure about spyhunter

your link is pushing spyhunter on people to get rid of "ccleaner spyware"

the CCleaner from piriform, we recommend on this site is good software

and nowhere else have I come across a "ccleaner spyware".

  robin_x 11:57 15 Feb 15

Looks like it's just a virus that the authors have pinched the name.

I thought this thread might refer to Pirifom CCleaner's new free feature of System monitoring and Active monitoring, which is On by default with new installs.
