Can't move files

I'm probably being very dim but I can't move files from my external hard drive. When I try and drag something from the J drive to my desktop, I get the "can't do that" icon. What am I doing wrong? I'm running as administrator.

Nothing really, that's just what I do with my external drive. They just copy without problem.
Have you tried copying instead of moving. If that works you could then delete from the external.
Must be something to do with permissions or UAC.

Try using the right mouse button apparently it can work in certain circumstances.

I should have added that Vista is set up to copy rather than move if the changes are between drives.

Usually, an attempt to move from one hard drive to another results in a copy - if you then wish, delete files from original hard drive.

Thanks, guys, I've got it sorted. Not quite sure what I was doing wrong but it's fine now.
