Best free way of installing non-Vista progs?

I've recently started guitar, and as such, I thought I should buy myself a pedal to provide the neccesary effects etc, when I came across one from digitech. It comes with some software that lets you plug the pedal into your PC via USB.
Long story short, the program detected that I was using Vista, and closed itself down.
Compatibility mode did nothing as per usual.

Anyway, I was wondering if theres any free sandbox programs or anything similar that would let me run the program AND allow the program to use the hardware USB ports (I read somewhere that sandboxing seperates the software from hardware so thats my concern).

All useful replies appriecated.

Plenty of complaints in a similar vein in search results, but no solutions...
