Hi there,

I have an Acer Aspire 5750G with a weird problem. When turned on, I cannot click on any of the desktop icons except the top first icon selected by default. But if i click on any of the arrow keys first and then try clicking on icons, it works. This behaviour has persisted for sometime now and its becoming nuisance. I have tried looking online for similar problem, but without any luck so far. Can someone please shed some light on what is causing this problem and what can be done to fix it once and for all. Thank you.

Ronnie

There are lots of possibilities. It's going to be trial and error I think.

First few results here have some suggestions and doing a selective start up/clean boot to see if it's one of your programs or Windows.

Be methodical and make notes on what you try and advise further.

Thanks for the reply Robin. I have tried reformatting and clean install twice already and everytime the problem recurs. I have tried selective startup with only system services loaded. Still the same result. I have nothing installed after reformatting other than the basic drivers. Could this be the result of some drivers? Would love more feedback from people with similar problem. Thank you.

Install the Chipset and Touchpad drivers from Acer if you haven't done already.

The others can wait.

Are you XP or Vista? 32 or 64? Basic, Home Premium, Pro?

Are you absolutely sure NOTHING is installed after clean install?

eg Anti-virus or Skype or Internet Explorer Add-ons?

Did you use an Acer disc for re-install or one from somewhere else?

Check msconfig Start-up items to confirm.

I found some more fellow sufferers' threads. IE8 or add-ons look promising as culprits.

Don't worry that they are in W7 threads. 2 pages each.

Allow Windows Updates to do its thing. May take some hours.
