To a certain extent we feel 'distanced' from that news until something brings it much closer to home for you.

My wife arrived at her office yesterday and bumped into one of her colleagues - a young lady in her early twenties.

My wife was surprised as the young lady was wearing casual clothes and was supposed to be on holiday in Italy.

"What are you doing here? You're supposed to be enjoying Italy" said my wife.

Her colleague replied “I came home early and I’ve just come here to collect the photos of my boyfriend. He was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday”.
