Makes my 2.6 MB/s down and 1.3Mb/s up for £24-00 seem like a bargain.

  beeuuem 23:56 17 Sep 07

That should, of course, be 158KB/s up

BT *are* thinking about rolling out a fibre optic network but to save costs not to peoples homes (FTTH) but to the BT green street cabinets instead (FTTC)

"BT is looking at whether to install fibre as far as the street kerb, where phone line cabinets are found, to deliver speeds of 40 to 50 Mbps.

But investors are nervous about BT making any big commitment to fibre. BT executives have repeatedly insisted there is no economic case for taking fibre all the way to homes, except on greenfield sites, because of the costs."

As much as I would love the opportunity to get these fast speeds, I *can* understand BT's investors nervousness about commiting to a fibre optic rollout as the cable companies (now Virgin Media) owe massive debts from the rollout and are struggling to pay them off.
