A variation on Identification longshot

NO, it is not a postcard, it is an unusual polynesian? shield which I have had for yonks and thought I would have a go at identifying and possibly finding out from whence it came. I have sent these photos to a bloke in Hawaii who specialises in weapons and ethnic artefacts and here is his reply.

"I am not sure on this one. It is shield for sure and may be african or south pacific. Also papau new Guinea. It is a cool item what ever it is. Hope you can find out more about it. Thank you & Aloha, Paul.”

It is carved from a very dense brown/red wood, weighs approximately one and a half kilos and has a carved pattern in places. Any thoughts would be welcome. click here click here click here click here

Brumas Just a suggestion a little off the track you suggest. It looks aboriginal to me. Maybe you should try sending a picture of it to Oz. They have huge trees out there which may be redwood trees. I can't remember. But the Abbo's carve all kinds of items from them. Then again there is New Zealand. A hell of a lot of Maori's could well have had shields like that when they made war and not faces......

Bingalau, thanks, will do. I am in the process of finding experts or museums that specialise in ethnic weaponry and artefacts using Google, then I shall send them an email.

It looks similar to a Australian shield link text

This looks very promising, I shall pursue this line of thought, thanks.

An update. As I had no further use for this aboriginal fighting shield I did my research and sold it on the Australian eBay site for £118 - Iv’e searched the shed but it was a one-off :o{{
