i have installed Ubuntu on Virtual Pc and i wondered if there is any personal favourites of yours regarding software. any think useful you can recommend.. any "must haves""....?

Ubuntu has most of the common applications already loaded.

However, for a superb CD/DVD burner; K3b

For an excellent replacement for Quicken; KMoney

xine is a pretty cool CD/DVD player and with the correct codecs, will replace PowerDVD rather nicely.

I think you may have already discovered The Gimp, which some claim is a Photoshop equivalent.

I found a program called TuxGuitar which allows you to compose & play back music. Supposedly comparable with Sibelius which costs megabucks.

Evolution for email.

OpenOffice is a must have.

Google have linux versions of Picasa & Google Earth.
