Travel Insurance for the over eighties

I am disgusted at some of the prices charged by insurance company's for travel insurance for me, because I am now over eighty. I was covered by my bank account but that was before I reached the magic age. When I have recovered from the operation I have just had I will be just as fit as many sixty year olds that I know.... Is there a company that would base the premium on a medical/physical test.

Does anybody know a cheap one?

Try 'The Oldie' mag. Link here
click here There are plenty of specialist insurance companies in there who don't think you are firewood if you are over 70 etc.

This was in the Telegraph, I think, some time ago - I don't know if it's any good. The review says, 'World First is a well-respected family-run insurance company that has been trading for 35 years. It has become something of a saviour for older people with stable, controlled medical conditions'

Might be worth a go.

on statistics, and statistically you are far more likely to need medical attention when you travel as you get older. The older you get, the greater the risk, and therefore the higher the premium.

You might well believe that when you recover from your operation "I will be just as fit as many sixty year olds that I know", and it may be true, but insurers look at statistics, and that tells them you a much greater risk.

It's irritating, but I'm afraid it's a fact.

FE. Yes I did know all about the statistical reasons for it. But it's still a heck of a blow when you read that you are no longer considered fit for purpose.

Maybe that is why some "oldies" just give up on living, everywhere they turn they seem to be unwanted. "The great unloved". I think I shall go and lie down and have a good cry....

I'm afraid that Insurance cover for over 80yrs men is regarded very high risk, especially having had surgery (you must declare this or they would not pay out if a claim was made)

nobody has said you are not fit for purpose, or unwanted. You've discovered that you're a bad insurance risk, that's all. It's not personal, so try not to get too down about it.

FE I am not down about it. I just have a weird sense of humour. Many thanks to all those who have supplied links. I have bookmarked them and will study them carefully. Some of them look very good at first glance.

The real joke about most travel insurance, is that they always exclude claims made for any pre-existing medical condition which you are most likely taking medication to correct, and then to add insult to injury the hit you with very large often up to 10x or more their headline cost premium , for what ammounts to a much lesser level of insurance cover

Cheers HC

Consider that you are in the same boat as a 'Teenage' Car Driver.

It's not only us Oldies that get hit by Statisticians, you know!
