Spam on Google mail

I have opened a google mail account and although I have only used it to send e-mails to myself to test it, I have started receiving spam. Do you think the spammers could have got my e-mail address from Google's servers or if not where else? My e-mail is not a name that could be easily guessed.

The e-mails in question just contain random words, and they often have small attachments. I have not opened these but my anti-virus says they do not contain viruses. What is the point of these random messages?
