Solicitors what are your experiences

I have had a few over the years. I am not one for comfy sounding family solicitors who can do everything in mediocrity. OK for a parking offence but useless with Genocide. Do you get what you pay for? How do you chose one , recommendation or just at random when you suddenly need one.

That is not an easy question nor is there an easy answer. It depends on what you want a solicitor for eg will, divorce, house purchase, boundary disputes, other sorts of disputes, charity matters, commercial law, etc. They tend to specialise and you should choose the appropriate one. I go by personal recommendation and haven't been let down yet. You do tend to get what you pay for and it depends on how complex it is. I think that there are set fees by the Law Society but will have to check.

I haven't had much experience with solicitors except with buying my flat about 10 years ago ... that cost me about £1,300 ... the deeds are in their office safe. I wonder how much it will cost me to take 'em out?

Not an easy question at all as everybody's circumstances are different. I was just looking for an overview of whether members are happy in general with the advice or actions taken by their chosen solicitors.

Aitchbee," wonder how much it will cost me to take 'em out?" probably nothing just ask for them. Maybe a small storage charge but should not be much I have mine and don't recall any charge for collecting them.

OK bumpkin, thanks for that reassurance.

Aitchbee, as I say there may be a small storage charge £8.00 per week plus the Vat would seem to be the norm.

Aitchbee, only kidding just in case you have taken my last post seriously

Well I was told by The Police Federation Solicitors and Barrister that I had no chance of even getting a Judicial Review, without any legal help I took on Hampshire's Barrister won the right to a review and won one of two points at the review itself. My opinion of solicitors pretty low

If you want them ask, for them. Don't know about your solicitor but when I bought my Bungalow the solicitor offered them to me or said he would keep them for so long then they would be 'disposed of'. Seems that they are no longer really needed as property is now required to be registered with the Land Registry (in England) and so Deeds as such are superfluous. Don't know if the same applies in Scotland.

I'm glad I got them as its very interesting going through all the old papers and discovering the history of your house. Even though my place was only built in 1957 I found that the original purchaser paid less than £2000, and sold just a couple of years later. It then owned by several generations of the same family until we bought it in 2005. I have all the original deeds, plans and, would you believe, Hand Drawn maps of the area.

In the '80s, there was a right of way issue with my house. The solicitor assured me it was all settled. When we came to sell, it turned out the paperwork hadn't been completed.

The delay in getting it sorted cost me a buyer. After a bit of wrangling, the solicitor made an ex gratia payment saving me the trouble of making a formal complaint (and saving him the bad publicity).

Really, though, it was my fault for just accepting his word rather than demanding proof that the paperwork was all sorted.

Since then, I've made a point of checking what solicitors have done or say I should do.

I think the world has got too complicated for a 'family solicitor' to cope with everything. I wouldn't use the same solicitor to deal with a property sale as I used to, say, deal with an employment dispute.
