A PAH was added to the subject's cigarettes, which was then modified by the body and turned into another chemical which damages DNA and has been linked with cancer

So they deliberatly added something to cause damage and based their results on that. Hardly seems like a fair study

I thinks just a ploy to get people to stop smoking and make money by getting people to a buy a flawed report.

"a stark warning to people considering smoking"

What a piece of nonsense.

If people have not taken any notice of the hundreds of warnings over the last half century they're no going to start now.

Is the young 11 year old taking his first puff in the school playground, or the fifteen year old being offered a cigarette by a new boy-friend on Saturday night really going to think "I'd better not, it can cause damage in minutes"?

People don't "consider" smoking. or at least, most of them don't, any more than they "consider" drink driving.

It's something you just sort of gradually slip into, in the case of smoking usually as the result of peer pressure and conformity.

The only thing that will stop people smoking is to make it 'socially unacceptable'.

This means that where once it was considered Smart of Sophicated to smoke, it is now not.

The problem is where do you stop, stop the smoking and take drugs. stop the drugs and take something else.

There will always be a need for a need to 'be one of the crowd'.

Besides if everyone stopped smoking tomorrow, all our other taxes would have to go up, now thats an idea-- Can we tax drugs?.

Aye especially if you drop the fag down the side of the sofa

  ams4127 19:50 18 Jan 11

...and especially if you were driving one of the very old minis with the sliding windows. You sling the fag out the front part, it hurtles back in through the rear part and vanishes down your shirt collar.....!

Are the conclusions of these professional researchers to be taken with a pinch of salt, their hardly a match for the expertise of forum members.
What is unquestionable and cannot be denied is the long term affects of smoking tobacco,to deny this is a sure sign that ones thinking process's has already deteriorated
