"BNP leader Nick Griffin, 51, conceded defeat in the early hours of the morning, saying the "hugely high" turnout of 61.8 per cent counted against him."

An election in a nut shell. We lost because more people voted for the opposition.

He won't be the only one saying that.

61.8% - "hugely high"?

In other words 38.2% of the eligible population of that constituency either decided not to, or couldn't be bothered to, vote.

I sincerely hope they won't feel that they have the right to complain about any political decisions or policies before the next election.

Mind you, that may not be long.

that some people in this forum were trumpeting about how there would be a huge nationalist backlash, come the election, and the BNP and UKIP would surprise us all with the number of votes they got.

Most of us didn't share that view, and we were right. In the local elections, where the far right parties thought they would do well, the BNP lost 22 seats, and UKIP lost five.

Nationally, UKIP could only manage 3% of the vote, and the BNP got a miserly 1.83%. Its leader, Nick Griffin roared triumphantly into third place in the Barking constituency. He convinced just 6,620 people enough to vote for him.

Some backlash.

the BNP only succeeds where there is apathy
