Why do some restaurants use silly terms like "Pan Fried" or "Oven Roasted"?

While there are other ways of doing these things, to most people "fried" means in a pan, and "roasted" means in an oven.

It's the alternatives which should be specified., like deep fried or pot roasted.

Perhaps we will soon see "Heat Grilled Sausages".

"On a bed of - - - -"

Means "On a pile of whatever cheap vegetable or salad leaf we could get to pad out your meal and make it look a lot bigger than it really is."
