Lots of reasons why it beggars belief and mostly justified but I seem to recall a fairly recent incident of a military plane with no forward landing gear being safely landed on some kind of rapidly made up contraption.

This may be total rubbish but as far as I can understand, the 727's nose wheel drops to the ground as the plane passes through its "Stall" Speed.

Which is around 110 knots, depending on loading weight.

Now as there are 2000yards in a knot, as opposed to 1760yards in a mile. 110knots must be about 130mph.
