Not the first time this has happened, but just imagine if Bush had had one of his numerous less then coherent moments during the oath...:))

I always thought that in the USA there was always a very definite separation of sate and church. If so then how come the oath is sworn on a Bible.

But according to the BBC this morning there was no Bible available when the oath was sworn the second time as there wasn't one at hand.

So could it not be said that the second oath was not legal as no Bible was used?

For sate read state

It's not really a question of an oath not being 'legal'. Fears were raised by constitutional experts that Obama's presidency might not have been constitutionally sound in view of the errors in the oath-swearing. It's happened before - Obama isn't the first president to fluff his lines.

As for state and church being separate - they are, but if you're going to swear an oath and you're a committed Christian, what better way to do it than on your holy book? Tradition also has it part to play - the bible was the same one that was used by Abraham Lincoln.
