click here This plus the current order book will secure jobs where I work for 7 years which is unheard of in shipbuilding.

If you read the article carefully Thales is involved they are French.

I hang my head in shape I did not read the full article, still some work is better then no work at all!

  Brumas 22:59 25 Jul 07

Shame even!!

According to the story, Thales has 16 per cent value of the contract and will be involved because of its specialist technological knowledge and products.

It's the equivalent of Boeing, for instance, buying Rolls-Royce jet engines for use in many of its aircraft, even though there are two major US jet engine manufacturers.

65,000 tonnes?

That's a hell of a lot of assets all in one compact target.

I wonder how many smaller, and perhaps faster and more agile, fleet carriers we could have got for the same money?

My comment exactly when I saw the news. Then I thought about manpower, policy and cost and realised why it had been decided to go for two targets rather than many.

An extract from the blurb, make of it what you will.
"A number of protective measures such as side armour and armoured bulkheads proposed by industrial bid teams have been deleted from the design in order to comply with cost limitations".

One operational, one in refit (when eventually built). Hope there are sufficient anti-submarine vessels to provide a screen for the one that is operational!!

You'd need a fairly large cap tally (or head) to get those names on!!

  Strawballs 12:27 26 Jul 07

With the armour piercing weaponry about nowadays all armour does is add weight nothing else the modern navy relies on early detection and its escort ships.

They will be 2/3rds the size of the American Nimitz class carriers and these will compliment the 6 type 45 destroyers currently being built.
