They can afford it. Rather than drag it on through courts, appeals etc etc, they just pay up. It's the easiest thing for M$ to do when they get "caught out" or whatever else they do that disadvantages other companies.

it's been dragging on for years. Microsoft isn't the only company which becomes involved in these cases, but it's the one with the highest profile - and probably the highest fines. I doubt that Bill Gates is tossing and turning his nights away with worry.
