Lighting a fire - can't be that diffcult.Can it?

My son is off on one of those "Outward Bound" trips with the school and part of his kit list is "Fire-making" equipment in a waterproof tin.

Ok.So advice is a firesteel and tinder.Matches, lighters etc are not allowed by the way.

The firesteel is easy but what tinder could he take? Preferably something easy to hand at home.

Get one of these click here and a load of fluff out of your tumble dryer filter. It goes up a treat.

razor blade, suitably protected. You can light most wood shavings if done fine enough and arent totally waterlogged.

AA battery and some wire wool.

Sounds more like an army style survival course than an outward bound course.

Bar of chocolate and a can of coke will get the job done.

Purchased a firesteel - click here - and experimented with various tinder.

Have to say that the most successful was the cotton balls/vaseline combination.

With the ingredients already in the bathroom and the fact that they can be used as part of the first aid kit this has to be the answer.

Many thanks for all who bothered to respond.
