I have experienced something similar. I could never draw, nothing ever looked right, gave up trying as a teenager. I later spent 14 years as a dental technician manufacturing porcelain crowns & bridges. As a part of my work I spent many hours carefully copying detail, colour, shade etc. In my 30’s for some reason I tried my hand at pencil sketching, I had an old book containing black & photos of animals. WOW was I surprised, all those years of learning to copy detail and I found I could do the same with pictures. Not just bragging here is a page from my sketch book.
I am no great artist but the surprise was huge having strongly believed that I would never draw.
