Ard (Scottish Gaelic) 'promontory';

muir-chon (Scottish Gaelic) 'sea dogs'.

A less likely derivation of the last two parts of this name, muir-chol (Scottish Gaelic) 'sea villany', suggests piracy, which may have been associated with this remote peninsula. The point marks the westernmost edge of the Scottish mainland.
