How much do CSI scripts owe to Conan Doyle

This has been preying on my mind for a while just lately.

I don't think that they've actually re-shot "The Speckled Band" yet but several of the themes and methods of observation and deduction have been very close to those of the great Sherlock Holmes.

What do you think?

expired on 31st December 2000, but the Conan Dolye estate has registered some of his characters as trademarks. Examples are: Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson, Mrs. Hudson, Professor Challenger, Brigadier Gerard and the Hound of the Baskervilles.

It means that if you want to use those characters in any public performance, or in any written work you must be licenced by the estate.

The situation is different in america, where copyright in all works published after 31st December 1922 runs for 95 years after the date of publication.
