By the computer advert for a 'me mo' pad. I was taught that it was 'mem o' short for memorandum.

You're not seeing an ad for a memo pad - it's a MeMO Pad. The name is a registered trademark, and it's pronounced 'Meemo'.

Good explanation - but it still grates on the ear.

It grates on your ear because you're hearing 'Memo pad'. Get over that, and it should cease to grate - it's a trade name, not an abbreviated noun.
