Glasgow Hobbits

  Aitchbee 22:10 07 Feb 11

I was amazed when I went to see The Lord of the Rings (film). Billy Boyd a Glasgow actor played one of the halflings.(with a real Glaswegian accent)(he was Merry or Pippin). How about a Cockney/Irish/Welsh/Jamaican/Geordie... Frodo or Bilbo for the new film The Hobbit?

If I remember rightly, Bilbo grew up in a hole in the ground. The Cockney/Welsh etc. that you mention might take exception to that - indeed you might be accused of racialism!

How about a neutral Ulster accent?

Hobbits are queer folk (so says JRR)

He played the part of perigrin 'Pippin' Took, now 48,he can only get bit parts,he may even do TV Ad parts to keep the wolf from the door, whereas the other lead actors from the Rings have done well for themselves

Who will play the part of the Dragon.(Big Fat Bling Person?)

does it really matter?

He's been Frodo on radio, He's been Bilbo on film, I think he would be a very good Smaug~~~ for the next Hobbit film.

I really hope they use a west country accent like Samwise Gamgee's in the first 3 lord of the rings films.

Just seems to fit the hobbits.
I guess being from the west country and hearing the accent daily im just used to it more.

Bill Nighy was very good as Sam in the BBC radio adaptation about 30 yrs ago. I think he might be a fitting choice for Sam with that lovely west country accent.
