England Football

seems to be lacking in fighting spirit, I know it was only a friendly tonight, but the standard of football was woeful. They do not deserve to be anywhere near qualifying for Euro 2008. They would only be shown up to be the mediocre team they are.. Why do the commentators always seem to be watching a different game than I am watching?

because most viewers are watching through rose coloured glasses.

I agree with Fruit Bat!

Owen out for a month with a thigh strain. How do the Rugby League lads ever get out of bed for the next game?

Bit harsh and I'm usually the first to criticise.

Without players such as the injured John Terry, England will never perform at their true strength.

Chelsea have struggled since he has been unavailable and, despite the fact I'm an Everton supporter of several decades' standing, Tim Cahill may well never have scored his superb overhead kick goal in the dying moments of last weekend's match if Terry had been on duty.

Not withstanding all the above, I'm pretty sure that Steve McClaren, decent man though he is, will not be in charge for all that much longer.

The success of the England team is too important in both the short and long term.

I have to say the England team has the potential to be the best in the world. All you need is a Manager who will get them playing as a team instead of 11 spoilt, overpaid, playboys. You havent had a decent manager since Venables and why McClaren was appointed is totally beyond me. The national manager is supposed to have a proven track record and hopefully some silverware on his mantle piece. What has McClaren ever done? I hope Russia win (and they will) simply because im fed up reading at the start of every tournament that "this is our year", "the best chance in 50 years".

Come on Norn Ireland!!!!!! :P

Then again, can anyone tell me what Venables won,the memory is dim with advancing years?I honestly cant remember.

stay away from Alex McLeish - he is ours!

I agree with a lot of the comments - England should be far better than they are with the players at their disposal.

Steve McLaren may be a decent man but he says some pretty stupid things - his going on about it will all come down to the game with Croatia, he has always thought that? wierd?

'I have to say the England team has the potential to be the best in the world'..they haven't done that for 41 years.

I do get truly tired of the same old excuses being made for the selection of big girl's blouses that attempt to play football for this country.
There is nowhere near the spirit that you could feel in the 1966 squad and I also get tired of hapless fans viewing things through their ubiquitous rose-tinted specs and blaming the weather, referee, pitch, wind, light.....anything but the team.
The England team are an accurate depiciton of what football has become and the fans are becoming pathetic apologists. If a player is 'good enough' to be earning £100,000 a week no-one can tell me that he cannot play as a team member or be as fit as a rugby player. I await the next batch of excuses.

The rewards are so great, the desire to give blood and suffer pain come second to shopping and socialising.

I must admit I would sooner watch a rugby match these days (Union or League). Just to see a bit of fighting spirit. The England Ladies' football team show more ability than the mens' team at the moment.
