I think if people used a bit of common sense as well as a bit of a cooling off period before they had a rant, then these items wouldn't appear in the news.
They shouldn't put anything on a public site which they wouldn't consider saying to their employer face to face.

I think we're in a whole new paradigm with social networking and you do have to learn to think about who can see what you post. My Facebook privacy settings only allow my friends to see my stuff and we all have a deal that we don't tag each other in compromising photographs, but I do have work people among my friends so I always think twice before posting anything there.
