China Wins a Gold Medal

According to Amnesty International, China won the gold medal for the most executions last year. However, they failed to take into account the population, which is rather a serious oversight IMO — 470 executions on the Isle of Mann would be something rather different.

I grabbed some population stats from Wikipedia and adjusted the figures to include population. I hope I didn't get my calculations wrong.

Saudi 143/ 27.6 m = 5.18 per million
Iran 317/ 71.2 m = 4.45 per million
Pakistan 135/ 169.3 m = 0.797 per million
China 470/ 1,321 m = 0.356
USA 42/ 303.8 = 0.138 per million

if we take Amnesty International's reported figure of 1860 execution in China instead of the official figure, the stats rise to 1.408 per million, still below Iran and Saudi Arabia, so I wonder why they get the gold medal?

I'm not trying to defend China's record, but it does seem to be a very popular whipping boy at the moment.

I suspect that Burma should be right up there in the medals table if the truth were known, but it doesn't even get a mention as far as I can see. click here

Tibet has been under harsh rule imposed on the country for 57 years, it is not just about executions although it would not bother me if Iran and Saudi were nuked until they glowed green.
