Changing fuel filter

Can someone tell me if its necessary to fill the new filter with fresh fuel. The Haynes manual says you should but I was told by the parts store that this only applies to older cars. Mines a 2002 focus diesel. Would there be a problem starting the car if there isn't fuel in the filter to start off with?

Yes fill with fuel, will help to prevent an "airlock" in the fuel line.

OK thanks. It will be just a bit awkward trying to put fuel into the pipe which is very narrow.

Managed to fill the filter with fuel. Took me over 2 hours to do everything though but the car started first time, no problems.
