why does anyone bother,i was at a friends last night and he was going on about how he had downloaded the latest movie,i,m not going to go on about the legallity of it if that is what people want to do it,s up to them.but what got me was he then showed me how he was downloading another movie using a programe called bittorent i really thought he was taking the p... this was going to take 110hrs to download he said it should speed up he had allready been downloading it for about 3hrs. he is on 1mb b/b.in the mean time if he was surfing the net it was as slow as a boat to china now he doesn,t sell the movies so why tie up your pc like that,i was offered to be showen how to do it but i gave a polite refusel(the second word being off)i watched a moie on the tv the other night it was about 10yrs old but to me that was the latest movie as i hadn,t seen it before.my friend also said he sometimes downloads avi or divx then converts them to dvd but the quality is,nt that good,so why bother.is it just me that thinks all this is a total waste of time.what do others think.

110 hours to get a poor quality film someone has probably made with a camcorder in the back of a movie theater not for me even if it was legal!

Ill pay my £10-£30 for my original DVD/boxed sets and enjoy the best picture quality with full surround sound, not have someones head pop up on the screen as they stand up leave the theater and have a clear conscience. With DVDs starting at £5 why bother copying?

I,m with you on this one.

A total waste of time.

My kids always rent or buy the latest stuff.

But I must be getting old, as most of it seems a total load of rubbish anyway.

I certainly would not waste time downloading it.

I was given a dodgy copy of Troy - which isnt out yet.

The quality is diabolical to say the least.

I couldnt watch it, Im getting the actual dvd when it comes out.

Once, i borrowed a pirated video from a friend, the quality was that bad it was unwatchable. Haven't bothered since.

Well, this is of course a subject that has been in the past a very touchy subject. I have, over the the years on this forum, seen many threads that either ask the question "is it ok" or "how do I do this" sort of thing, all have attracted the sort of replies that are of the "you are a pirate", "it is illegal and you should be shot" and other sanctimonious replies. Kazzaa has been, and will no doubt, be the subject of many more threads, all visited by the "I don't do, or condone that sort of thing and if you do then you are the scourge of humanity" type.

But putting all that aside, lets look at the attraction for people to do this using little Johnny as a test subject.

Johnny is 14 yrs old,he has got unlimited broadband access in his bedroom (courtesy of well meaning parents so he can do his homework, his PC is equipped with a dvd burner and a fairly large hard-drive.

He has heard from his mates at school that bit-torrent is safer virus wise than Kazzaa (no spyware/trackers/viruses etc) so he finds a program like shareaza and loads it up. Next he visits a site like Supernova and finds that lo and behold he can get no end of new release films for nothing. So whilst he is working away doing his homework/e-mailing mates/listening to music/looking at porn etc, he is also downloading in the background a new film like Resident evil 2 (not released here yet) or maybe Spiderman 2 etc all dvd rips and good quality. Once downloaded he then recodes the film into Mpeg2 using Nero and burns to dvd. Viola a near perfect copy of the latest film and long before it is available for rent of sale here, (and alot of the time before you can see it in the cinema.

So what if it takes a long time to download?, he has, after all got unlimited access, so what if it is not 100% cinema quality?, he can still watch it on his dvd player in the living room, so what if it is illegal?, who's going to come knocking at his door?.

Now do you see why people do it????.

I think people do it because they haven't been properly taught right from wrong? Then again I'm just a silver surfer so who listens to me?

" think people do it because they haven't been properly taught right from wrong? Then again I'm just a silver surfer so who listens to me? "

It is isn't about that, it's about the fact that everything is free on the internet if you look for it, yes, some is pirated, yes, some is illegal, yes it's wrong. BUT at the end of day it comes down to the fact that it is there for the taking if you want to go to the trouble of taking it. Lots of people in every country in the world are doing it, it does not make it right, but face facts, it is happening.

The far east has made it's fortunes from copying/pirating every thing that stood still.I went to Malta recently, numerous shops selling fake levi jeans!,go on holiday to any country in the world and you are able to buy counterfeit goods,if nobody bought them then there would be no market, but people do so there is. Same as the internet, so long as there is free stuff for the taking then people will take it, human nature, and anybody who says that they have never in their entire lives taken something for nothing, well then nuth said1.

But back to little johnny for a moment, he has had a quick look at a bit-torrent site and seen that he can, for little trouble acquire the following titles. Alien versus predator (not released yet), spider-man 2(same), dodge-ball,all the latest blockbuster movies, and he can get them for the price of a blank disc.

Now do you see why people do it????.

I entirely agree with sapins.

It is illegal. The fact that you can do it is neither here nor there. It is like exceeding the speed limit, it is illegal, and must not be done by normal law abiding people.

It's part of the lack, and loss of moral values that we all suffer from. Its an illness.

Rant over.

Yes it is illegal, and I have not said otherwise, I do not condon it myself, but then again I have been guilty of exceeding the speed limit, and I consider myself to be a normal law abiding person, I am guilty of downloading stuff from the internet I should not have (mp3's videos etc) but then again I consider myself to a normal law abiding person.

I will qoute what I said earlier "anybody who says that they have never in their entire lives taken something for nothing, well then nuth said."

yes i can see why people do it but it still makes no sense what so ever to me.(unless your wanting to make money of it)why tie up your pc to the point where your pc goes at snails pace,as i said in my first post i am not going to slag people off regarding the legallities of it if that is what they want to do then so be it.myself i,m not a great film watcher and don,t buy the over priced new releases.but what i do is probably also illegal i borrow dvd,s from my son,s or daughter watch then return.the thing that got to me was how much it slows your pc when i was on dial up i could surf faster, and what,s the point of going to all the trouble and expence to get b/b so as you can surf the net faster and then slow it to a crawl by downloading something burn it to a dvd (more time wasted)watch it for say 2hrs brag about how you have watched it to your mates let,s say 15 to 20mnts.put it away and go through the process again.no not for me i got a pc and b/b so i could learn and surf the web.i am not a holyier than now type of person if the folk that are dowloading this stuff were getting it in a faster time and could still surf the net at a reasonable speed it would make more sence to me.thanks for responses so far please keep them coming as it,s nice to know what other people think.
