For your Information: Unsafe Images

  recap 12:28 20 Sep 04

I am not sure whether this has been covered in here as yet, if it has I apologise for the duplicate posting.

It was originally thought that viruses, worms and other malicious code could not be spread thought image files, slowly this misconception is being eradicated. On Tuesday Microsoft has announced that it is possible for malicious code to gain access to a computer through a JPEG image file, promptly Microsoft has released a software tool to assist users in fixing this security flaw.

At present there have been no reported occurrences of malicious code being spread via image files; however using the software tools released by Microsoft will hopefully protect a computer from future attack.

This is not the first time that the way in which software handles image files has resulted in vulnerability for computers. Microsoft had released security fixes that removed the vulnerabilities caused by the handling of GIF and BMP files.

Microsoft is not alone as several other developers of applications that view image files have released fixes for their currently released software to plug security holes.
