WinXP SP3.5
Yesterday I received 12 Critical Ms Updates. After checking to see what they were, I went ahead and said OK download and install. It downloaded them, then began to install. When it got to number 4 it froze, or at least seemed to. I waited and waited. In the end I terminated the install and rebooted. I then ran a manual check to see what updates were outstanding. There were 9 outstanding, this included the one it froze on. I ticked all but number 4 (the one it froze on). It then went ahead and installed the rest without incident. The one I didn't tick - second time around - still hasn't been installed. I haven't, as yet, tried to install it again. I wanted to see first if anyone else was having any problems with this one?
It is...
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168)

It is 20.1 MB, it say's...

"Install this update to help strengthen authentication credentials in specific scenarios"

Anyone have any idea why this would be critical, why I need it - if I do - and what 'Specific Scenarios'?

Some of them did take a long time to install you should have left it running.

Since posting this thread I've done a Web search. The wrong way round, I know, but hey no-one is perfect, even me!
Anyway, it seems that this is a universal problem. Many people are getting round it by isolating the part that is causing the problems and deleting it. It would appear to be causing problems with Windows Communication Foundation (WCF).
I think I'll hold off attempting to install it again, until I've heard from you guy's.

Re yesterday`s updates ... 12 or 13 for me as well (XP Sp3) but installing was so slow, I thought there must be something wrong.

Something like 23 mins in all, and it seemed to hang for 5/6 mins on two of them.

Quite a lot of .net framework stuff that remains something of a mystery, to me anyway, but installation completed, re-booted and all seems to be well (so far ...).

...and are uninstalling faster than they took to install. Also for those who's PC said these had installed, Ms were still offering them as uninstalled critical updates?

Thanks for your input woodchip and provider 2, but I think I'll bide my time a little longer and see if anyone else throws their hat into the arena.

Good idea. The more the merrier kind of thing ...

Something to bear in mind though, is that there`s likely to be some confusion (again!) concerning what is supposed to be already installed and what is an update to that initial installation.

I`m thinking Sp 1 and Sp 2 on .net frameworks 2 and 3.5 ... not to mention confusion over the Windows OS Sp 2 and Sp3.

I`m assuming I was already up to date and these .net framework things are security fixes for them.

  Graphicool1 11:22 11 Jun 10

Yes I can see your point of view, however that doesn't answer my other question, that being how can the following update explanation be considered a 'Critical Update'?...

"Install this update to help strengthen authentication credentials in specific scenarios"

...and in 'What, specific scenarios'?

  provider 2 11:32 11 Jun 10

Difficult to say for sure but here`s Ms `s explanation:

"A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to tamper with digitally signed content without being detected, when this content is being consumed by an application that makes use of the Microsoft .NET Framework on a Windows-based system. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer."

... applies to all of these .net framework updates, apparently, including 1.1 SP 1

I think that with all updates it depends a lot on the speed of the cpu also, so maybe all our experiences will differ im sure. I can well imagine that even with my 3.4Ghz cpu with 3 gig ram, it still took sometime to update. I have found that in the past that these updates were sometimes sluggish. I can say that with all the critical updates i have done, i have noticed some differences but only good ones. Office 2007 is working faster now.

  provider 2 11:47 11 Jun 10

... forgot to mention, I`m still getting "native images" files from Ms on each re-boot after installing yesterday`s batch of fixes.

I`m not entirely sure what these are all about either except that they`re some sort of developer stuff.
