XPpro boot problems

Having probs with a collegues Compaq Laptop

It is relatively new but in the last couple of days the machine has failed to boot properly.

It reaches the screen where usernames and pictures should be presented for logging in. In this case the blue screen (not a BSOD)
Appears but without any usernames or picture to select from. [Ctrl alt del] x2 does not bring up the traditional log in or the task manager.

Safe-mode produces the same result but at lower resolution.

Is there a way to get around this rather than carrying out a reinstall from the restore disk?

Kind regards

I'd use the restore function within XP and select a restore point a few days before the problem occurred. If you can boot in safe mode, this option should be available

Nope can't log into the machine in safe mode it hangs at the same point as the standard boot.

I haven't got her restore disks yet, when I get them I'm hoping there will be a repair option.
