I have just brought a amd 4800 x 2 processor as part of an upgrade i am doing. I need to change the bios, but not sure how to do this. I have download the correct bios, but need to know if i install the cpu then the bios update, or update then cpu. Any help welcome.

The BIOS update will work with the old CPU so I'd just do it with the old chip in place and then change it.
Be very sure you have the right BIOS though as if its the wrong one you can really muck things up.
Sorry if you already know this but thought I should mention it in case you didn't.

I agree with Tb - only ever change one thing at a time (where possible) - then at least you have a good idea what went wrong if something does go wrong.
