XP won't start, file missing

On boot up my laptop shows, 'window could not start because the following file is missing',

I've tried chkdsk /r, but that hasn't helped, could someone please advise me further.

go to run type sfc /scannow note the space between c and / and have your xp cd ready

Thanks VoG, I'll go thru that page, it looks a bit complicated but I'll let you know if it works.

How can I go to run if windows doesn't start, is there another way.
