My PC has two hard drives 'C' (master) & 'D' (slave)with win98se installed on the 'C' drive. I would like to swap them over, making the existing 'D' drive the master, reformat the 'D' drive and install XP. Can anybody tell me please; if I leave win98se on what will be the slave drive so that I can still access files on it will the PC work OK.

Not a problem. Do not swap the drives, reset Bios to boot CD first and boot from your XP CD, at the prompt format and install on your D drive XP should find the other system and once installed will give you the option to boot from either.

It will add some files to the root of C drive to do this.
