XP will not start due to file problem

Recently I am having a problem with the computer 'locking' during various operations. Only way to clear is to switch off, but on rebooting the following error message appears.
'Windows xp could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt :\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32|CONFIG\SYSTEM
There is a workround at MS Knowledge Base Article 307545, but it's a pain!
1. Any other sufferers ?
2. Any suggestions as to the cause of this ?
Thanks Brian Cooper.

Have you tried "Booting to Last Known Good Configuration".

Might be worth a try.
