XP will not boot

This might prove awkward as the PC (belonging to a friend) that will not boot is in Wales and I am in Yorkshire and messages have to be passed by phone!

Apparently XP shut down ok the last time the PC was uded then failed to start. I managed to talk him through to starting in Safe Mode but it then asks the user to 'click on the user name'. But, no user name shows and none was in use(apparently). So we are stuck as pressing any other key does nothing. From what is said I think he might have an OEM disk that will reinstall to factory settings but obviously does not want to do this unless no other options available.

Any ideas?

F8 0n startup, then try the "Last Good Configuration" option, might work.
