XP User Account problem

Hello, my PC runs XP and it's just over two years old. It's developed a new and worrying problem which I've searched for and can find nothing similar about.

When changing between user accounts, it's has three, it now sometimes seems to have trouble closing the account it is presently in. Then the screen turns black and while the computer makes noises as if still working, it is entirely dead to any command and I have had to resort to turning off the power at the mains and rebooting.

Can anyone enlighten me to what this problem is and how I can attempt to fix it?

Many thanks.

The User Profile may have become corrupted. If this is the case click here to see how to copy data from a corrupt account to a new account.

Thanks for your reply.

Any way of testing to see if the profile is corrupted? And would it be for all or just one identity? How could I find out which is the problem?

I've noticed the problem doesn't happen if an user account is logged off, before opening another, but so far only when two accounts are open.
