xp updating using borrowed disc

OK, it's a bit naughty but I'm a little short of cash so I borrowed a friend's XP disc to upgrade my old PC from Windows '98.
Now it all installed fine but I've heard that it's OK to activate Windows but if I attempt any Windows updates then the friend who I borrowed the disc from will not be able to update his system.
Is this true or can I update my system without my friend being affected ?
Thanks.

It's more than naughty, it's illegal. EULA.

...use someone elses disk to upgrade. Yes, you probably will have that problem if you do as you say. Once activated from your machine, the OS is locked to it.

Yes you will have problems as has been said it is only allowed on one pc at a time unless a multi user licence is paid for. just stating this is rendering you liable for copyright breach along with your friend
