Is this an XP thing

I have two computers networked, the printer is directly attached to the computer using Win 98se. The other computer with WinXP home is the problem. Whenever I use Word 2000 I get error messages saying that Word has encountered a problem and must shut down UNLESS the W98 computer is online. Then Word behaves perfectly after extensive testing I have decided that the HP printer on W98 is part of the problem. If Word on the XP machine cannot find it on the network it shuts down.

Why have I a setting incorrectly configured in XP ?

THe XP machine is a dual boot with W98 and under Identical conditions Word 2000 behaves perfectly when in W98se.

have you tried mapping the printer as a network drive from the xp pc?
