xp theme gone, device manager empty,

Please help anyone, today i rebooted after defraging and i noticed that my xp theme reverted back to windows classic with no optin to change to xp theme and i have no sound, i went into my device manager to atleast try and get my sound back and it's all empty showing nothing, but i'm still up and running with windows xp pro. anyone have an idea, i looked for any bad exe. files and did a virus scan, nothing turned up. help help.

I am no expert but has the mute button being clicked in the sound options??

This happened to myself about 4 weeks ago.
It happened after I tried to uninstall Norton AV2002. When I eventually managed this and installed McAfee AV ( and ran same ) the McAfee AV detected ( and repaired ) a corrupt system file ( sorry cannot remember file ). In my case at least the problem was almost certainly caused by the ( very problematic ) uninstall of NAV.
What AV do you have ? Have you scanned recently ?
