XP Start Menu--No shortcuts recently used progs.

While changing some settings I removed the shortcuts from the start menu (not classic menu). Now when I use A program such as wordpad or a game like freecell I no longer get the shortcuts showing. However the 3 shortcuts pinned to start menu are still there. The only new thing I have done is to use Active Sync. Any ideas, apart from going to a previous restore point, how I may get things back

Start/control panel/taskbar & start menu
Open start menu tab/click on cusomize.
Number of programs on start menu.
Set this to how many you want.
