I've just downloaded and installed XP SP2 - but its not recognising any of the the devices i have connected via the usb ports, i have looked at the device manager in the control panel and it says there are no conflicts - i did download SP2 last week and it had the same problem, so i restored xp to before it was loaded on? Help!!!!

try disconnecting all usb devices and rebooting. Then add each device individually - they may then be recognised and installed.

Thats doing nothing either!

its clearly something sp2 is doing to the pc, as when i take sp2 off, it doesn't happen anymore. The PC has previously run sp2 before i restored it to its factory settings!

try running sfc /scannow and see if that sorts it.

USB Permissions
Start - Run and type
regedit
Press OK.
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB.
Right click on the folder and pick permissions. Set to ALLOW.
Do the same for:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBSTOR

or

Refresh USB Ports
Use Drive clean up to remove USB device drive info from the registry
or
In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB,
reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.
Your equipment should now be recognised.
