XP sound recorder problem

Hi guys, just installed a mic to record my voice for my Spanish program. I can hear the sound through the speakers, but it wont move the audio line on the recorder window and it plays back with no sound. When I go to close window it asks the sound file has changed do I want to save it ?.

Mic shows in volume cont panel and is not muted, Windows sounds off, sound from everything else ie. CD, DVD, and music files. No yellow marks in device manager.

TIA john

On the sound card you have 3 sockets. 1--Line in 2--Line Out---3-- Mic In. have you tried changing the plus around ?

Yes I have tried mic in line in hole, but still no luck. I take it the mic is working if sounds come through speakers ?
