Help, I have just reformated my computer. I have loaded Windows XP and Office 97. When I shut down it says "it is now safe to turn off your computer" but will not turn off at the switch. Any ideas??

Hi, if you hold the start button in for four seconds it should switch off.

Thanks that worked! but shouldn't it shut down automatically?

  Technotiger 23:33 25 Nov 06

Yes it should. Have you tried it again, shutting down in the normal way I mean.

Yes I have, it will only shut down if I hold the button in like you suggested.

I had this problem for ages and tried lots of things.

If you have more than 1 user account then this may be the problem. The only thing that worked in the end was deleting the user accounts so you just have one main one to work from. XP will save any files that are personal to the the user account, you delete, and stick a shortcut on to your desktop and name it whatever the user account was called.

Once you have deleted the user accounts you then need to disable the password for the one you have left.

This worked for me, I saw it on a forum somewhere else.
