XP Shutdown problem

I have a Pentium 2.8 with an MSI motherboard running Win XP. For a while it has been hanging on shutdown and I have done a complete format and clean reinstall a number of times to try and isolate the problem. I now have it running with only AVG 7 and Zone Alarm Pro and virtually nothing else. SP2 has been installed as well as the hotfix (WindowsXP-KB885626-v2-x86-enu) as without it the computer would not even boot. If I start it and do not use email or internet it will shut down again in 9 seconds. If I use anything it hangs on closedown for up to two minutes. Any ideas?

Sorry I haven't replied but we've all been ill with a nasty stomach bug!

The problem was there before SP2 although installing SP2 on my laptop has now created the same problem!
