XP Shutdown problem

I am experiencing a problem at shutdown after the pc has been running for an hour or more. It freezes when it reaches the "saving your settings"
dialogue.I have visited the Microsoft website relating to this and it advises installing
Service Pack 1. I already have this update, which fixes this problem. I know there can be various reasons which can cause the pc to freeze at shutdown, does anyone have any other ideas worth trying?
one thing I have done is to update the graphics card driver, the pc shutdown ok after a period of time.

I sometimes get this happening myself and still don't really know the reason why. Sometimes I do a full scandisk or defrag my computer and that helps. So you could try that. I'm sure for an advanced computer user here would be able to figure this problem.
