XP shut down wont work first time

When shutting down nothing happens first time I click shut down but when I repeat the procedure immediately afterwards it all works perfectly. This is irritating rather than a big problem and it started to happen quite recently.

Anyone got any ideas?

Looking in event viewer, the problem is described as follows:-

Product:- Windows Operating System
ID:- 1073
Source:- USER 32
Version:- 5.2
Symbolic name:- WARNING_EW_SHUTDOWN_CANCELLED
Message:- The attempt by user %2 to restart/shutdown computer %1 failed

Microsoft hasn’t much to say about this.

Hi, try a System Restore back to a date before this started happening.

Cheers.

Hello Fruit Bat /\0/
Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunaely, none of them address my problem exactly and the "near fit" ones which I have tried have done nothing to help but thanks again.

I have noticed that there are some subjects on which few people make postings and this may be one of them!
