XP registry errors reported by a Messenger window

My mother-in-law's pc is receiving several messages in pop-up windows headed 'Messenger', warning her that there are serious problems with the registry, and that she should go to 'such and such' website and download some software to fix it. The name of the website is not always the same with each warning - one of them is 'click here'. Is this a valid XP warning that she should heed? If not, how do we stop them appearing?

No it isn't a valid Windows message. Turn off Messenger Service click here

Thanks for the quick response. I'll tell her she can stop panicking :)
