XP re-starts when i select shut-down

I've XP home, for the last few months when i select shut-down, the pc goes off but then re-starts (taking me to the log-in screen)

Can i change this in the control panel settings.

I do not have a restore point for a time prior to this problem.

Can anyone help.

Nan Ominous, are you using the correct shut-down method of. Start/Turn off computer/shut down from the on-screen controls?

If you are using the power button on the front of the PC to shut down, then go to control panel/performance and maintenance/power options/advanced, and select the option you wish the power button to perform.

"When I press the power button on my Computer"

Select [Shut down].

Hope this is of help. j.

as i said, it does shut down but then it powers up again.
